18/10/2011 – GUSRC Autumn Election 2011 Update

37 candidates are in the running for GUSRC Autumn Election 2011, with manifestos now online via the election section of this website.

Hustings for the candidates takes place tonight, 18th October from 6pm in the Williams Room, John McIntyre Building. This is your chance to quiz the candidates on why they would be a good representative and what they’d do to reshape the SRC.

Voting will take place online from 9am tomorrow morning, Wednesday 19th October. The link will redirect from this site so please visit tomorrow morning to cast your vote.

14/10/2011 – Information about new Postgraduate Space

The text below is taken from an email sent to all postgraduate students by GUSRC President Stuart Ritchie on 20th September 2011:

Primarily I am writing to update you on the plans to build a new post graduate social space on campus. Over the summer a working group including the SRC, University senior management and representatives from the PG Community have been meeting to bring this proposal to life. The project is still in its infancy, and many details are yet to be confirmed however in order to avoid rumour and speculation, I feel it pertinent at this time to offer information as to how the plans are taking shape.

It has been identified that current provisions of social space on campus are insufficient for the growing postgraduate community at the University. The working group seeks to address this by developing a space which will offer an alternative venue for the postgraduate and staff community. The space will be exclusive, and although it will offer a range of services and facilities similar to those already offered elsewhere on campus, they will be specifically designed to cater for the postgraduate community at every stage of development. The new postgraduate space will exist within the University’s main building, replacing and supplementing the existing facilities at 1A the Square. The space will be divided into three key areas; social space, quiet study space and a lecture theatre. The social space will include both bar and catering facilities and a small space designed for lectures and talks.

The development of this space marks an exciting step forward for postgraduate students of the University of Glasgow, and as GUSRC President, I am excited to be a part of the development of the project on behalf of the postgraduate community. As we move forward I will endeavour to keep the channels of communication open and we will be inviting a range of students to form a focus group to help the architects with the design.

7/10/2011 – Provisional Candidate List for GUSRC Autumn Election 2011

GUSRC have released the provisional candidate list for Autumn Election 2011.

The list contains the names of students who have submitted nomination forms, all of whom are pending verification.

In total, there are 38 provisional candidates across 27 constituencies.

A final candidates list will be made available, along with candidate photos and manifestos, early next week.

The Heckling Meeting takes place on 18th October, with polling on 19th October.

5/10/2011 – Call for Conversational English Volunteers

GUSRC’s Student Volunteer Support Service [SVSS] are calling for native English speakers or anyone with a solid grasp of the language to volunteer as part of GUSRC’s Conversational English program.

As a volunteer you’ll be asked to meet with an international student of the University for an hour per week, usually at a mutually convenient time and place. Volunteering doesn’t require any teaching qualifications, just some of your free time to help international students improve their skills.

28/09/2011 – GUSRC response to Glasgow University RUK fees.

Following the announcement that the University have chosen to set fees at £6750 per year for the majority of Rest-of-UK [RUK] students, Glasgow University Students’ Representative Council [GUSRC] made clear that whilst they are pleased that the University has shown a degree of responsibility in setting the fee level, they must now provide further details of support packages which will be introduced for students.

GUSRC President, Stuart Ritchie said:

“GUSRC welcome the University’s decision of a fee level below £9,000 per year but are fully aware that the total cost of a University of Glasgow degree will be £27,000 excluding bursaries. We now ask the University to provide further details of how this cost will be subsidised, particularly for those from low-income households.”

“GUSRC are an anti-fees organisation, and we therefore condemn the fee increase at a base level, however we recognise that the position the University finds itself in is not one of its own choosing, and that neither the Scottish nor Westminster governments should escape blame following the removal of the teaching grant for RUK students.”

26/09/2011 – Nominations Open for GUSRC Autumn Elections 2011

GUSRC is the main representative body for students on campus and this is your chance to be part of it by standing in the Autumn Elections 2011. Whether you’re a new student fancying trying your hand at student politics or whether you want the chance to revolutionise the way students of the University of Glasgow are represented, elections are open to all students so seize the day and have a go at reshaping GUSRC as you see fit.

Nominations are now open for the GUSRC Autumn Elections 2011 and the full election pack with descriptions for each posistion as well as the campaigning rules and regulations is available now online or via GUSRC Reception in the John McIntyre Building.

20/9/2011 – Update to volunteering with Classroom Support (SVSS)

Due to changes in legislation, all volunteers volunteering in a school during school hours will be charged to have their PVG Scheme Membership (£59.00) and PVG Scheme Membership update (£18.00) processed.

This is being enforced by Disclosure Scotland as volunteers in schools are not volunteering in charitable organisations. If you are volunteering in an after-school club, the SRC can process your application free of charge.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused and are happy to work with you to find alternative volunteering opportunities.

9/9/2011 – GUSRC Response to Hetherington Inquiry Report

Glasgow University Student Representative Council (GUSRC) are satisfied with the conclusions drawn by the Hetherington Inquiry as outlined in the report published 9th September 2011. GUSRC considers the report a fair and factual account of the events in regards to the University of Glasgow’s attempt to end the occupation of the Hetherington Research Club on 22nd March 2011.

Whilst it is regrettable that no evidence was received from students identifying themselves as members of the occupation, we believe that the report provides a balanced account of the events of 22nd March 2011 and with the occupation now drawn to a close, that the issue has been concluded.

Furthermore, GUSRC recognise that the recommendations laid out, particularly in reference to the procedures of the University, are a call for action. We hope the University will act quickly on the recommendations that have not already been addressed in the time following the incident, in order that events such as those seen on campus 22nd March are not repeated.

Former GUSRC Vice President – Student Support, Fraser Sutherland, continued to work with the inquiry following the end of his term of office with GUSRC; his role on the committee has had a clear influence on the conclusions drawn. GUSRC are pleased that the inquiry recognises the importance of engagement with elected student representatives in relation to issues affecting students on campus. We’d also like to thank Charles Kennedy for taking an active role in campus affairs and for chairing the inquiry panel.

GUSRC will continue to work for students, engage with members of University management and ensure that students of the University of Glasgow are represented at all levels within the institution. We welcome any comments or suggestions to president@src.gla.ac.uk
