Volunteering with Girl Guiding

Girlguiding Scotland welcomes volunteers of all backgrounds, age groups and abilities. Guiding is flexible and can be arranged to fit around a busy lifestyle.

You can choose how involved you would like to become. The choices are:

Unit Leaders and Unit Assistant

Every Rainbow, Brownie, Guide and Senior Section unit has at least one Leader, who has completed the Girlguiding UK Leadership Qualification. Leaders have overall responsibility for the unit, although this is often shared between a team. Leaders and Assistant Leaders work with the girls to plan activities and to ensure that finances and Go! are kept up to date.
Unit Leaders are female, aged 18-65. Assistant Leaders are female aged 18 and over. If you decide to become a Leader or Assistant Leader, you will be assigned a Mentor to help you complete your qualification, and an experienced local support network of volunteers is there to help.

Unit Helpers and Occasional Helpers

For those who don’t wish to commit to becoming a Leader but do want to work in the unit with girls and young women, the role of a Unit Helper is ideal. Helpers are vital to guiding, because Girlguiding UK has a recommended adult-to-child ratio.
Unit Helpers and Occasional Helpers can be either male or female, aged 18 and over. They can wear member wear if they choose. How often helpers work with units varies and is up to individuals; you may be part of a helpers’ rota

The age groups you can volunteer with are:

Rainbows are aged between 5 and 7 years
Brownies are aged between 7 and 10 years.
Guides are aged between 10 and 15(ish) years.
Senior Section aged 15 to 25 years.

Some Information about Girlguiding Glasgow

’We’re proud to be part of Girlguiding UK, the largest youth organisation for girls and women, which enables them to develop their potential and to make a difference to the world. We have over 3,000 members from our youngest Rainbows, right through to Trefoil Guild. Being involved as an adult in Guiding is deeply rewarding and no matter how little or how much time you have to spare, there is always some way that you can get involved.

Girls and young women get involved in a huge range of exciting activities from outdoor challenges including climbing, abseiling and canoeing to learning new skills such as first aid, becoming a circus performer, toy making and much more. And then there are the opportunities guiding provides for international travel, getting involved in community action projects, camping and trying out new sports.

You can help at Rainbows (5-7years), Brownies (7-10), Guides (10-14), Senior Section (14+) or with a Disabled Unit. We would love to welcome you into our 10 million strong family of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, from 145 countries around the world.’
